The Patient Experience
Whether you need routine, diagnostic care or emergency treatment for a serious cardiac event, the Heart Center of Greater Waterbury is ready to care for your advanced cardiac needs.
The Greater Waterbury community is fortunate to have access to these services close to home at both local hospitals. Being cared for in an environment you are familiar with, by local doctors you trust can be a comforting and less stressful experience for you and your family.
We want you to be well informed and at ease with your medical treatment, care providers and your stay in the hospital. But we know that when you are planning to have a cardiac procedure, or your condition has taken you by surprise, you and your family will have many questions and concerns. Our goal is to help you prepare as best as possible by telling you what to expect, answering your questions and providing support.
Coronary Angioplasty/Cardiac Catheterization
If your physician has recommended a cardiac catheterization or an elective angioplasty, you will be scheduled for this at either Saint Mary's Hospital or Waterbury Hospital through the normal outpatient scheduling procedures. After your discharge from the hospital you will need to follow up with your cardiologist within a week or two.
Open Heart Surgery
Perhaps your physician has told you that you need to have open heart surgery. If so, you may be scheduled to have coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) or surgery on one of your heart valves. The cardiac surgeon's office will schedule an appointment to evaluate you for the surgery. This appointment will be in the surgeon’s office at either Saint Mary's Hospital or Waterbury Hospital. After your evaluation you will also need to have preoperative testing which may include blood work and other diagnostic tests. Once your surgery is scheduled you will be evaluated again just prior to admission by one of our cardiac nurses where you will be given specific instructions for the day of surgery.
